Rio Carnival 2027 Dates: When Is Carnival in Rio?

Put the Rio Carnival 2027 parade dates in your calendar before booking a hotel. The best nights sell out first.

Rio Carnival is a run of parade nights and street parties, not one date circled on a calendar. In 2027, the Special Group parades on February 7, 8 and 9, with the Champions Parade on February 13. Here is how those nights fit around the wider Carnival period so you can book the right days in Rio.

Rio Carnival 2027 main dates

The Special Group samba schools will parade at the Sambadrome on:

February 7, 2027 February 8, 2027 February 9, 2027

Rio will again use the three-night Special Group format introduced in recent editions. These are the biggest Sambadrome nights and the dates most international visitors mean when they say they are going to Rio Carnival.

Gold Series dates

The Série Ouro will parade on February 5 and 6, 2027. Seventeen schools are scheduled across the two nights. These parades take place before the Special Group and can be a good alternative if you want the Sambadrome experience for a lower ticket cost.

Champions Parade

The Champions Parade is February 13, 2027. The six highest-placed Special Group schools return to the Sambadrome after the competition results. This is a particularly attractive night for visitors because you see the strongest-performing schools in one programme. The downside is obvious. You need to remain in Rio until the following weekend. I can think of worse travel problems.

Street Carnival begins earlier

Rio's street Carnival lasts much longer than the formal parade period. Riotur currently says the authorised 2027 street Carnival season is planned to begin on January 16. Hundreds of bloco processions take place throughout the broader Carnival season. The full approved bloco schedule is normally finalised closer to the event. Do not expect January information to be identical to the final February programme.

Technical rehearsals

If you are visiting Rio before the official Carnival, there is another interesting option. Technical rehearsals at the Sambadrome are scheduled for January 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2027, with free admission currently announced.

This is an underrated way to experience the preparations without buying a main parade ticket. You do not get the full costumes and competition spectacle. You do get samba schools rehearsing inside the Sambadrome with an enthusiastic crowd. For zero ticket cost, the maths is excellent.

When should you arrive?

If the main Special Group is your priority, I would arrive in Rio by February 4 or 5. That gives you time to settle in before your first Carnival event.

Arriving on the afternoon of your Sambadrome ticket creates too many opportunities for flights, baggage and traffic to conspire against you. Carnival will provide enough chaos without help from airline operations.

How long should you stay?

I would allow at least five nights. A full week is better. Carnival days run late, and trying to sightsee intensively every morning can become exhausting. Build in at least one slow beach day. You are allowed to visit Rio without proving your efficiency to anybody.

Carnival vs street blocos

The Sambadrome is a choreographed competition involving samba schools, huge floats and elaborate costumes. Street blocos are public processions and parties spread around neighborhoods. You should experience both if possible. They show two very different sides of Carnival.

When should you book hotels?

Now, if your plans are firm. Accommodation around Ipanema, Copacabana and Botafogo becomes expensive as Carnival approaches. Flexible cancellation is useful if you are planning far in advance. See our where to stay for Rio Carnival guide before booking.
