Where to Stay in Rio de Janeiro for Carnival

Carnival changes the map of Rio. Choose a base for the blocos or Sambadrome nights you actually plan to attend.

Choosing where to stay during Carnival is different from choosing a hotel for a normal week in Rio. The city is busier. Transport takes longer. Accommodation prices rise. And a location that looked perfectly reasonable on Google Maps can become less appealing when you are returning at 4 am surrounded by approximately half of Brazil.

For most international visitors, I would focus on Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo or Lapa, depending on what part of Carnival matters most.

Copacabana: best for first-time visitors

Copacabana is the safest recommendation for most travellers in the planning sense, rather than as a guarantee about personal safety. There is enormous hotel supply, metro access, restaurants and easy access to the beach. Many tour companies also use Copacabana as a pickup area. During Carnival, this can make life considerably easier.

You can enjoy daytime blocos, return to the hotel and head back out later without being isolated from transport. The downside is price. Book early. Waiting for a last-minute Carnival bargain in Copacabana is a hobby for people who enjoy stress.

Ipanema: best for beach and atmosphere

Ipanema is my favourite choice if your budget allows it. You have the beach, restaurants and metro, plus Carnival activity around the Zona Sul. It is easy to spend time around Ipanema and Copacabana without travelling across the entire city. Accommodation is generally more expensive and supply is smaller than Copacabana. That means good hotels disappear early.

Lapa: best for nightlife

If the party is the main reason for your trip, Lapa becomes interesting. You are close to samba venues, nightlife and central Rio. Hotel prices may also be lower than in Ipanema. The disadvantages are noise and distance from the main beaches.

I would recommend Lapa more readily to younger travellers or repeat visitors than to somebody arriving in Rio for the first time.

Botafogo: best value

Botafogo may be the smartest compromise. You have metro access, restaurants and nightlife, and you sit between Centro and the beach neighborhoods. Hotel prices can also be easier to accept than Ipanema during Carnival.

If Copacabana accommodation has reached a level where you are considering selling a kidney, check Botafogo.

What about staying near the Sambadrome?

This sounds logical but is not always necessary. You may attend the Sambadrome for one or two nights while spending the rest of your trip at blocos, beaches and attractions around other parts of Rio.

I would rather stay somewhere useful for the whole trip and plan transport to the Sambadrome. Central accommodation can make sense if the parade is your overwhelming priority. For most visitors, I prefer the Zona Sul.

Copacabana or Ipanema for Carnival?

Choose Copacabana for hotel variety and usually better pricing. Choose Ipanema for atmosphere, walkability and restaurants. Both have metro access. If two hotels are similar in price and quality, I would personally choose Ipanema. If Copacabana saves a significant amount, take Copacabana. You can spend the difference on something more enjoyable than a postal address.

How early should you book?

As early as your travel plans reasonably allow. Carnival is not a normal weekend. Popular hostels, mid-range hotels and well-located apartments can fill months ahead. Flexible cancellation can be useful if flights are not confirmed. Also check minimum-stay requirements. Some properties require packages covering several nights during Carnival.

Should you move hotels during Carnival?

Usually no. Traffic, luggage and crowds make moving accommodation during the peak period unnecessarily annoying. Choose one base and stay there. If you want a split stay, do it before or after the main Carnival days.

Getting around during Carnival

The metro becomes particularly useful. Road closures and blocos can affect normal traffic routes. Allow more time than usual and follow official transport information during the event. If attending a specific parade or booked activity, check the exact meeting arrangements beforehand rather than improvising. Carnival is excellent.

Carnival with a dead phone and no idea which entrance you need is less excellent.
