A hotel on Rua Visconde de Pirajá, convenient for Ipanema’s shops, restaurants and beach. Useful for travellers who prioritise location over a large resort-style setting.

If somebody asked me where to stay on a first trip to Rio and gave me no other information, I would probably say Ipanema. It is compact, walkable, has one of the city's best beaches and puts you between Copacabana and Leblon. The problem is that everyone else has noticed.
Hotel prices in Ipanema can be higher than in Copacabana, particularly for rooms facing the beach. These are the properties I would check first.
Fasano is the obvious luxury pick. It sits directly opposite Ipanema Beach close to Arpoador. Its rooftop pool gets the photographs, but staying here is really about the entire location. Beach in front. Arpoador beside you. Restaurants behind you. Very little logistical suffering involved. See our complete Hotel Fasano Rio guide.
Sol Ipanema is directly opposite the beach near Posto 9. The hotel currently offers a rooftop pool, beach service and breakfast, with a location on Avenida Vieira Souto. This is one of the first properties I would compare if you care more about location than big-brand luxury. You can walk almost everywhere you are likely to use in Ipanema.
Hotel Arpoador sits at Rua Francisco Otaviano, right beside the beach in Arpoador. This gives you immediate access to both Ipanema and Copacabana. For surfers or travellers who plan to watch sunset at Arpoador repeatedly, the location is almost comically convenient. It also feels more intimate than Rio's large luxury hotels.
4. Ipanema Inn
Best for: central neighborhood feel
Ipanema Inn is the sort of property I would choose if I wanted to be inside the neighborhood rather than inside a resort. The streets around it are filled with cafés, restaurants and shops. You lose the dramatic giant-hotel facilities. You gain the ability to walk out and immediately feel part of Ipanema. That is a trade I would happily make on many trips.
5. Mar Ipanema Hotel
Best for: practical base
Mar Ipanema is well positioned for both the beach and the streets behind it. This is another hotel where the main value is location. If you expect to spend your days sightseeing and your evenings eating around Ipanema or Leblon, giant facilities are not essential. A clean room, good breakfast and useful address may be all you need.
6. Arena Ipanema Hotel
Best for: Arpoador and Copacabana access
Arena Ipanema sits toward the Arpoador side. This makes it particularly useful for travellers who want to walk between Ipanema and Copacabana. I like this part of the neighborhood for first visits because your beach options effectively double.
7. Boutique apartments and aparthotels
Ipanema also has plenty of smaller accommodation outside traditional hotels. These can work especially well for stays of a week or more. A kitchenette becomes surprisingly appealing after the fourth restaurant meal of the day. Check building security, recent reviews and exact street position before booking.
8. Stay just across the border in Leblon
If Ipanema prices are unusually high, check eastern Leblon. The neighborhoods run directly into each other. You may find a better property while remaining within walking distance of Ipanema Beach. Likewise, Arpoador and western Copacabana can offer strong alternatives on the other side. Do not let an invisible neighborhood boundary cost you 100€ per night.
Why I like Ipanema for first-time visitors
The neighborhood works at every hour. Morning beach. Lunch around the side streets. Metro to sightseeing. Sunset at Arpoador. Dinner nearby. You can have a full day without constantly calling rides. That matters more than another hotel amenity you may never use.
