Spending New Year's Eve on Copacabana Beach is one of those experiences that sounds slightly ridiculous until you actually see the scale of it. A huge crowd dressed predominantly in white, live music, the ocean beside you and fireworks above the beach make Rio's Réveillon one of the city's biggest annual events. It is also a night that rewards planning.
The full programme and transport rules for 31 December 2026 are still awaiting official confirmation. Riotur has begun procurement for Copacabana's 2026/27 fireworks, but a procurement notice is not a final event schedule. Use the choices below to plan, then check the city's December notices. Why does everyone wear white?
Wearing white at New Year is a widespread Brazilian tradition associated with peace and good fortune. On Copacabana, the effect is striking because so much of the crowd takes part.
You do not have to wear white, but if there is ever an evening to accept the dress code without overthinking it, this is probably it.
Where does Rio celebrate New Year's Eve?
Copacabana is the main event.
The beachfront hosts major stages and the city's best-known fireworks display. Other parts of Rio also hold celebrations and fireworks, but international travellers usually mean Copacabana when they talk about New Year's Eve in Rio.
The most recent official city plan also spread celebrations across several other parts of Rio rather than concentrating everything in Copacabana. (Prefeitura do Rio)
The exact 2026/27 stage locations and show times are not yet confirmed. Choose a beach section partly by your hotel and route home: the place with the easiest exit can be more useful than a spot directly in front of the most famous hotel. Our Copacabana guide explains the neighbourhood's different sections.
Copacabana fireworks and viewing choices
The beach and promenade are the natural public viewing areas for fireworks launched offshore. Riotur has issued procurement notices for the 2026/27 display, but the final launch layout, duration and safety perimeter need official confirmation. A beachfront room or ticketed party does not automatically guarantee a clear view; ask the venue which space you can use at midnight. (Riotur notices)
Choose the sand for the shared countdown and the strongest atmosphere. Choose a reserved venue if seating, bathrooms, food and an easier base matter more than standing in a very large crowd.
New Year's Eve dinner, boats and parties
Many restaurants and hotels replace their normal service with fixed menus or separate party packages. Ask whether the booking includes drinks, a table through midnight, rooftop access, a fireworks view and re-entry. A normal hotel room reservation may include none of these.
Dinner near your chosen beach section avoids a difficult cross-city journey late in the evening. Boats and rooftop events can offer a different view, but verify the departure point, weather policy and actual viewing area before paying. The Rio nightlife guide helps with the rest of the night.
Where should you stay?
For New Year's Eve specifically, staying in or close to Copacabana is a major advantage. Walking back to your hotel after the fireworks can be considerably easier than joining thousands of people trying to cross the city.
Ipanema and Leme can also work well depending on exactly where your accommodation is. Book early. This is not the weekend to assume that a bargain beachfront hotel will mysteriously appear on December 28.
Check the exact room category if a sea view is important: a hotel facing Avenida Atlântica may sell viewing access separately. Compare locations in our Copacabana hotels guide and New Year's Eve hotel shortlist, then check the provider's current price for your dates.
Getting to Copacabana
Public transport becomes particularly important on New Year's Eve because road access is heavily restricted. For the previous Réveillon, Rio implemented special metro arrangements and closed road access into Copacabana progressively during the evening. (Prefeitura RJ) Exact arrangements change each year, so check the official plan before travelling.
The general lesson remains the same: do not plan on simply getting a taxi to the middle of Avenida Atlântica shortly before midnight.
Check MetrôRio's 2026/27 ticket and station notices before leaving. Save a return route and an offline map. If travelling with others, agree on a meeting point away from the busiest beach exit.
What time should you arrive?

Earlier than you think. Arriving in the late afternoon or early evening gives you time to enter the area, understand where you are and find a position without rushing. Bring patience.
You are attending one of the largest celebrations in the city, not a quiet rooftop dinner for twelve.
What should you bring?
Keep it simple. Take your phone, a payment method, limited cash and whatever small essentials you genuinely need. Avoid carrying a large expensive camera setup or an open bag through dense crowds.
Wear comfortable shoes or sandals and clothes you are happy wearing for several hours outside.
A charged phone, water and a light layer for the walk home are useful. Keep valuables close in dense crowds; the shoreline after midnight has darkness, waves and many people moving at once.
What happens at midnight?

Fireworks are launched offshore, making the beach the natural viewing area. Many Brazilians also have personal traditions around midnight, including jumping seven waves and making wishes. Whether you participate or simply watch, walking toward the water after midnight is part of the atmosphere. Just remember that several thousand other people had the same clever idea.
Is Copacabana New Year's Eve free?
The main public celebration on the beach has traditionally been free. Hotels, rooftops, restaurants and private parties offer paid alternatives, often at premium New Year's Eve prices. A paid event can make sense if you want reserved space, food, drinks and bathrooms rather than the full beach crowd.
New Year's Day
Do not schedule Christ the Redeemer at opening time unless you possess levels of discipline I deeply respect. Give yourself a slower morning. Beach, brunch and a walk around Ipanema are a considerably more humane January 1 plan.

Is the metro open on New Year's Eve?

Where should I stay for Réveillon?

Allow enough time to pass any access controls and settle before the countdown. There is no reliable fixed time because the crowd, beach section and official plan change each year.
Is a beachfront hotel room guaranteed to see the fireworks?
No. The exact room and event package determine what you can see and where you can go at midnight. Ask the hotel to confirm both in writing.

Do not rely on it. Road restrictions and heavy demand can prevent a direct drop-off. Plan a route that works without a last-minute taxi.
How early should I arrive at Copacabana for New Year's Eve?
Give yourself plenty of time; access and transport become slower as the beach fills. Decide where you want to stand and how you will get home before the evening starts.
Is Copacabana New Year's Eve free?
The public beach celebration is free, while hotel parties, rooftops and organised events charge separately. Check current rules and access arrangements for your year.
Can I see the fireworks from a hotel in Rio?
Some seafront rooms and rooftops have views, but the angle varies a lot. Confirm the actual view, party access and any minimum stay directly before paying a holiday premium.
