Calling July “winter” in Rio can be slightly misleading if you come from northern Europe. You are unlikely to encounter snow. You are considerably more likely to spend lunch outside in a T-shirt while wondering whether somebody has misunderstood the definition of winter.
July is one of Rio's cooler and drier periods, making it an excellent month for sightseeing, hiking and spending long days outdoors. For travellers who dislike intense summer heat, I actually think Rio de Janeiro in July is underrated.
Rio weather in July
Historical weather data puts typical July daytime highs around 25°C / 77°F, with nighttime lows around 18°C / 65°F near the coast. That is cool by Rio standards. For many international travellers, it is simply pleasant.
July is also one of the drier parts of the year compared with Rio's wetter summer months. You can still get rain. This is weather, not a contractual agreement.
Can you go to the beach in July?
Yes. Sunny afternoons can still be perfectly good for sitting on Ipanema or Copacabana. Whether you want to swim depends more on the day's conditions and your personal definition of cold water.
Locals may consider the weather cool while you stand beside them thinking this would qualify as an excellent summer day at home. Bring swimwear. You will regret not having it much more than you will regret carrying it.
July is excellent for sightseeing

The cooler temperatures make Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Centro and neighborhood exploration more comfortable. Walking around Santa Teresa at 25°C is considerably easier than doing the same hills during oppressive summer heat.
July is also a good time to follow our Rio de Janeiro itinerary without needing a tactical air-conditioning stop every forty minutes.
Hiking in July

This is where July becomes particularly attractive. Pedra Bonita, Tijuca National Park and other outdoor areas are more comfortable in cooler weather. Always check trail conditions and forecasts first. Dry-season averages do not mean every trail is dry every day. Rain can make forest paths slippery.
What should you pack?
Bring summer clothes plus one warmer layer. During the day, shorts and T-shirts may be enough. In the evening, a light jacket or sweatshirt can be useful. Long trousers are worth packing.
You do not need a winter coat unless you have an unusually complicated relationship with temperatures below 20°C.
Also bring:
Swimwear. Sunscreen. Walking shoes. Light rain protection.
Is July crowded?
July overlaps with Brazilian school holidays, which can increase domestic travel. Popular attractions may therefore be busy, particularly during weekends and clear-weather days. Book Christ the Redeemer and other timed attractions ahead if your schedule is fixed.
The city is not quiet simply because international summer holiday logic says July should be off-season. Brazil is having winter. Brazilian families still travel.
Is July cheaper?
Prices vary. You avoid the enormous accommodation pressure associated with New Year's Eve and Carnival, but July school holidays can support demand. Do not assume every hotel will be cheap. Compare several neighborhoods.
Copacabana often provides better hotel value than Ipanema, while Botafogo can be an excellent alternative. Our where to stay in Rio guide compares them.
What time does it get dark?
Winter days are shorter than Rio summer days. This matters for viewpoints and beach plans. Schedule hikes and major outdoor attractions earlier rather than casually starting a trail in late afternoon. For sunset, check the exact time for your travel dates. Arpoador remains one of the best places to watch it.
What are the best things to do in July?
I would emphasize activities that benefit from cooler weather. Christ the Redeemer. Sugarloaf. Tijuca National Park. Pedra Bonita. Santa Teresa. Centro. Beach walks and sunset at Arpoador. A clear July day can be almost ideal for seeing Rio. Our full things to do in Rio de Janeiro guide has more options.
July vs summer
Choose December to February if hot beach weather and Carnival-season energy matter most. Choose July if sightseeing, hiking and comfortable temperatures matter more. Personally, if somebody offered me five full days of clear 24–25°C weather in Rio, I would not complain because the calendar happened to say winter. There are more serious travel problems.
