Add the Sugarloaf cable car
Urca's public streets and sea wall are free. This ticket is for the separate cable-car attraction beside Praia Vermelha.
Urca is where Rio slows down at the edge of Guanabara Bay. You can come for the Sugarloaf cable car, then stay for a waterfront walk and a drink by the low sea wall. That second part is the reason this small neighbourhood deserves more than a dash through its ticket queue.
A first visit works best as two separate plans: Praia Vermelha and the cable-car base on one side, then the bay-facing Mureta da Urca on the other. They are close enough to combine, but the two shorelines face different directions and offer different views.
Urca at a glance
| Go for | Best approach |
|---|---|
| Classic landmark | Sugarloaf cable car from Praia Vermelha |
| Easy waterfront time | Walk the bay-facing promenade toward the Mureta da Urca |
| Sunset | Find a public place along the sea wall, then check the actual day's sunset direction |
| Food | Small neighbourhood bars and kiosks; check current opening before making a special trip |
Urca itself does not have an admission ticket. The cable car is a separate paid attraction, and the operator's official site is the place to confirm its current schedule and ticket rules.
Start at Praia Vermelha

The small beach sits between Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf, beside the cable-car station. Even without a ticket, it is worth seeing the mountains rise directly behind the sand. The paved Pista Cláudio Coutinho begins nearby and offers a green coastal walk when it is open.
Do not treat the trail to Morro da Urca as automatically open or assume hiking up gives you a free cable-car ride down. The Parque Bondinho trail guidance says return cable-car tickets must be purchased separately at the upper station.
Walk to the Mureta da Urca

After the mountain side, head through the residential streets to the bay-facing waterfront. The Mureta da Urca is the low wall where people sit with snacks and watch the light change across Guanabara Bay. Keep the pavement clear and respect residents; this is a neighbourhood, not a purpose-built viewing platform.
It is an easy place to spend longer than expected. Arrive before sunset if you want a comfortable spot. The view is across the bay rather than straight out to the ocean, and the evening colours depend on cloud and season.
How do you get to Urca?
A taxi or app car to Praia Vermelha or the cable-car station is the simplest arrival from most hotels. Buses serve the area, but check a live route and allow for the walk from your stop. If you are continuing to the Mureta, set that as a separate destination rather than assuming it is immediately beside the cable-car queue.
For a half day, combine Urca with Praia Vermelha or a Sugarloaf visit. If you only have one clear sunset in Rio, compare it with Arpoador: one is a social bayfront pause, the other a rocky ocean-facing viewpoint.

Do you need a ticket to visit Urca?

Can you walk from Praia Vermelha to the Mureta?
Yes, through the neighbourhood. Allow time for the walk and use a current pedestrian route.
Is Urca a good sunset spot?
Yes for its relaxed bayfront atmosphere. The exact sun position and colour change with season and weather.
