Búzios is one of the easiest beach escapes to add after Rio. The peninsula sits east of the city and offers dozens of beaches, restaurants and a much smaller town atmosphere.

It became internationally famous after Brigitte Bardot visited in the 1960s, although thankfully you do not need a French movie career to enjoy it now. Travelling from Rio de Janeiro to Búzios is relatively simple.

Shared transfer from Rio

For international visitors, a shared transfer is often the easiest choice. Services typically collect passengers from hotels or designated points in Rio and drive directly toward Búzios. You avoid getting to a bus terminal with luggage and are usually dropped closer to your accommodation. The disadvantage is multiple hotel pickups.

You may discover parts of Copacabana you never intended to study while the van collects its remaining passengers.

Bus to Búzios

Long-distance bus services connect Rio with Búzios. RIOgaleão also currently lists a special Galeão–Búzios bus service operated by Auto Viação 1001, which can be particularly useful if you are travelling directly from the airport.

Schedules can change, so check current times before building the trip around a specific service. For budget travellers, the bus usually provides the best value.

Private transfer

Private transport becomes appealing for groups. You get picked up from your hotel or airport and travel directly to Búzios. There is no waiting for other passengers and you can choose a departure time that fits your itinerary.

If four people are travelling together, I would always compare the private price against four separate shared-transfer tickets. The premium may be smaller than expected.

Renting a car

Driving gives you plenty of freedom once you reach the Região dos Lagos. That can be useful if Búzios is one stop on a larger trip including Arraial do Cabo or Cabo Frio.

Inside Búzios itself, though, you can manage without a car depending on where you stay. Parking around popular beaches and the center can also become inconvenient during busy periods.

How long does the journey take?

Travel time varies with traffic. Weekends and holidays can make a noticeable difference as residents of Rio head toward the coast. I would leave in the morning rather than planning a late departure and assuming the journey will take exactly the fastest time your map suggests. Google Maps has never personally sat in Friday traffic leaving Rio.

Where should you stay in Búzios?

For first-time visitors, being close to the center around Rua das Pedras is convenient for restaurants and evening walks. Beach-focused travellers may prefer accommodation nearer João Fernandes, Ferradura or another preferred beach. Búzios is spread across a peninsula, so hotel location matters. Check the map before booking the cheapest attractive pousada you find.

Is Búzios a day trip from Rio?

There are day tours, but I think Búzios is much better as an overnight destination. A day trip involves a lot of driving for a relatively short period in town. Stay at least two nights.

You can then spend a full day beach-hopping rather than repeatedly checking the time because your transport back to Rio leaves soon.

Búzios or Ilha Grande?

Choose Búzios for restaurants, nightlife, beaches and easier road access. Choose Ilha Grande for hiking, boat trips and a more car-free island atmosphere. Both work well after Rio. If your itinerary has room, there is no rule requiring responsible adults to choose only one beach destination.

When should you go?

Búzios works year-round, although weather and crowd levels vary. Summer and holiday periods are much busier. If you prefer a calmer stay, shoulder-season weekdays can feel completely different from a peak summer weekend.
