Landing at RIOgaleão after a long flight creates a simple problem. Your hotel is probably not beside the airport. Most visitors are heading toward Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon or another part of the Zona Sul, so you need to choose between public transport, an airport transfer, Uber or taxi. There is no single perfect Rio de Janeiro airport shuttle.
The right choice depends on luggage, arrival time and how much logistical enthusiasm you have left after passport control.
Private airport shuttle
A pre-booked private transfer is the easiest option. A driver meets you at the airport and takes you directly to your accommodation. This is what I would choose when arriving late at night, travelling with children or carrying enough luggage to suggest you have permanently moved to Brazil. It also removes uncertainty around the first journey in an unfamiliar city.
Shared airport transfer
Shared shuttles can be cheaper than private transport while still providing hotel-area drop-offs. The disadvantage is waiting for other passengers and potentially visiting several hotels before your own. For solo travellers, the price difference can make shared transport worthwhile. For a family of four, compare the total with a private car.
Uber from RIOgaleão
Uber operates from the airport. RIOgaleão currently has dedicated Uber pickup arrangements at the terminal, so follow the airport signage and instructions in the app rather than accepting unsolicited transport offers. This is often the easiest balance between price and convenience.
Enter your hotel address before leaving the terminal Wi-Fi and confirm the registration plate before getting into the car.
Official airport taxi
Official regular and executive taxis are available at Terminal 2. The airport currently lists official taxi pickup on the ground floor around the arrivals area, with regular and executive taxi services operating there. Taxi is straightforward if you prefer not to use a ride-hailing app. Stick to official services.
There is little reason to begin a Rio holiday by negotiating transport with a random person who approached you beside baggage claim.
BRT from Rio airport
Budget travellers can use public transport. The airport's Transcarioca BRT connects RIOgaleão with the wider transport network and currently operates daily from around 4 am to midnight. This is much cheaper than private transport. It is also considerably less convenient when carrying large luggage. If you have a backpack and plenty of time, it can make sense.
After an overnight flight with two suitcases, I would personally pay for the car.
Special bus to Terminal Gentileza
RIOgaleão also currently lists a special airport connection to Terminal Gentileza, alongside regular municipal and intermunicipal bus services. From there you can connect with other public transport. Again, this is primarily a budget option rather than the most convenient way to reach a beachfront hotel.
Which option should you choose?

For one traveller on a budget, consider public transport or a shared transfer. For two people, compare Uber with shared transfers. For families and groups, private transfers often become more competitive. For a late-night arrival, I would prioritize door-to-door transport. There is no prize for completing the cheapest possible airport journey after midnight.
Should you book ahead?
Private transfers should usually be booked beforehand. Uber and official taxis can be arranged on arrival. Public transport does not require advance booking, but check current operating hours before relying on it for a very late flight.
What about Santos Dumont Airport?

SDU is much closer to central Rio and the Zona Sul. Airport transfers from Santos Dumont are generally shorter and simpler. Do not confuse the airports when arranging transport.
A driver waiting at GIG while you stand at SDU is a bad start to anybody's evening.
FAQ - Rio de Janeiro Airport Shuttle
Is there an airport shuttle from GIG to Copacabana?
Private and shared transfer services are available, while Uber and official taxis provide direct alternatives.
Is Uber available at Rio airport?
Yes. RIOgaleão has designated Uber pickup arrangements.
Is public transport available from GIG?
Yes. BRT and several bus services currently operate from the airport.
Should I book an airport transfer in advance?
For a private shuttle, yes. Uber and official taxis can usually be arranged on arrival.
What is the easiest airport transport for families?
A private transfer is generally the simplest because you travel directly to your hotel without changing transport.
What is the cheapest way from GIG to central Rio?
Public transport can cost less than a direct car, but it involves more changes and time. Compare the full route to your hotel's exact address, not just the fare to a transit stop.
Is a shared Rio airport shuttle worth it?
It can suit a solo traveller with light luggage, provided the drop-off and departure times work. A direct car may make more sense for a group or a late arrival.
How do I find my airport pickup at GIG?
Follow the instructions on your booking and confirm the terminal and meeting point before flying. Do not assume every shuttle uses the same curb or arrivals hall.
