Book a Museum of Tomorrow visit

For a visit with transport and some context on the waterfront, this tour combines the museum with Olympic Boulevard. You can also buy admission directly from the museum.

The Museum of Tomorrow is easy to recognise from Praça Mauá: a long white building that looks ready to sail into Guanabara Bay. Inside, it asks a harder question than its futuristic exterior suggests: what kind of future are we making? It is a strong first museum choice in Rio, especially if you pair it with the port area rather than arriving for one photograph and leaving.

The museum currently lists Wednesday as its closed day and uses timed tickets. Its published hours, prices and free-entry rules can change, so treat the official ticket page as the final check. If you have a fixed weekend slot, book before travelling across town.

The main exhibition, Do Cosmos a Nós (“From the Cosmos to Us”), moves through five areas: Cosmos, Earth, Where Are We?, Tomorrows and Us. It connects the origins of life with biodiversity, human activity and possible futures. The museum's exhibition description says its experiences are available in Portuguese, Spanish and English, which makes it easier for international visitors to take part rather than merely watch other people press buttons.

This is an interactive science museum, not a hall of future gadgets. Some sections ask you to make choices or compare scenarios; others are better read slowly. The subject can be serious, especially when climate and human impact enter the story. Give the exhibition time to make its argument. A rushed circuit misses the point and leaves you with little more than a photo of the building.

Temporary exhibitions and activities change through the year. Check the programme before you buy; a show that catches your interest can turn a two-hour visit into most of an afternoon. Families should pick one or two sections to discuss with younger children rather than expecting every display to explain itself.

How to get to Praça Mauá

The VLT Parada dos Museus is the simplest stop for many visitors coming through Centro. The museum's transport page also explains the walk from Uruguaiana metro station and from the Praça XV ferry area. If you are coming from Copacabana or Ipanema, use metro plus VLT or a direct car, depending on luggage, heat and your plans afterwards. There is no museum-owned car park.

The waterfront around the building is open and exposed. Bring water and sun protection for the outdoor part of your visit, even if the galleries are your main plan. Photograph the long profile from Praça Mauá, then walk towards the bay to see how the structure changes from another angle.

Can you combine it with MAR and Centro?

Yes. MAR is on the opposite side of Praça Mauá, so it is the most efficient second museum. The two do different jobs: Museum of Tomorrow is about scientific ideas and decisions; MAR uses art and exhibitions to explore Rio and wider Brazilian stories. Check both programmes before paying for two entries. Our Rio museums comparison helps if you want only one.

For a wider afternoon, continue on our Downtown Rio walking route towards Praça XV and Cinelândia. Do not schedule the entire route around a timed museum entry with no room for lunch. Choose the museum first, then keep the walk flexible.

Accessibility and a practical visiting plan

The museum's accessibility page lists ramps, lifts, adapted bathrooms and limited wheelchairs. Contact the museum for a specific need or group visit. Photography is generally allowed except in the Cosmos area, with restrictions on flash and selfie sticks; check the current visitor rules at entry.

My first-visit plan is simple: book a morning or early-afternoon slot, spend about two hours in the main exhibition, see the building from outside, then choose MAR or a Centro walk. That gives each stop a reason to be there and leaves space for Rio to interrupt the schedule in a good way.
