Ilha Grande, Brazil: Beaches, Trails and Where to Stay

Ilha Grande rewards a slower plan: a base in Abraão, a beach walk, a boat day and enough time for the crossing from Rio.

Ilha Grande is the destination to choose when you want your beach trip to begin with a boat and continue on foot. There are no normal visitor roads connecting the island's beaches. You move by trail, taxi boat or excursion boat, which makes the island feel adventurous but also punishes rushed itineraries. For most first visits, Vila do Abraão is the easiest base.

Is Ilha Grande worth visiting?

Yes, if beaches, rainforest and walking matter more than nightlife or resort convenience. The island has a network of 16 marked trail routes and more than one hundred beaches, with Vila do Abraão acting as its main arrival point and service centre. (Visit Ilha Grande)

The tradeoff is logistics. Weather affects boats, luggage moves over uneven streets and some of the most famous places need a full-day commitment.

Where should you stay?

Vila do Abraão is the default choice for a first visit. It has the largest selection of pousadas, restaurants, shops and boat departures.

Araçatiba suits travellers who want a quieter base and are comfortable planning transport around that side of the island.

Other beaches can provide a secluded stay, but verify electricity, mobile signal, meal options and boat arrangements before booking. Use RioGuru's accommodation search to compare current stays. Some booking links are affiliate links; this can support the site without changing the price you pay.

Best beaches on Ilha Grande

Lopes Mendes is the headline beach: a long open-ocean curve reached by trail or by boat to Pouso followed by a forest walk.

Lagoa Azul is known for calm-water snorkelling and is normally visited by boat.

Dois Rios combines a wild beach setting with the history of the former prison settlement.

Aventureiro feels much more remote and requires more deliberate transport planning.

Do not judge beaches only by photographs. Sea conditions, boat routes and trail state should shape the day's choice.

Best trails

The marked trails are one of Ilha Grande's main advantages over a conventional beach resort. From Abraão, popular routes include the historic circuit, Feiticeira, Dois Rios and the connection toward Lopes Mendes. The full Lopes Mendes walk uses the T10 and T11 routes; the Dois Rios route follows T14. (IlhaGrande.com.br)

Pico do Papagaio is a serious hike rather than an extra stop after breakfast. Start early and consider a qualified local guide, particularly for low-light departures. Heat, rain, roots and mud can transform the same trail. Ask locally about current conditions before setting out.

Should you take a boat tour?

Probably, if this is your first stay of three nights or more. Boat trips reach coves that would take much longer on foot. Common categories include half-island routes, Lagoa Azul trips and longer circuits around the island.

Compare the type of boat, maximum group size, swimming time and weather policy. A fast speedboat and a large schooner produce very different days even when the stop names look similar.

How many days do you need?

Three nights is a sensible first visit. That gives you one major beach or trail day, one boat day and some protection against imperfect weather. Two nights can work, but arrival and departure logistics will dominate a larger share of the trip.

Five nights makes sense for hikers, divers and travellers comfortable allowing the island to set the pace.

How do you get to Ilha Grande?

You travel overland to a mainland port and continue by boat. Common gateways include Conceição de Jacareí, Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba. Schedules and journey styles differ, and your accommodation may favour one route.

What should you pack?

  • A light bag you can carry over uneven ground.
  • Comfortable trail shoes plus sandals.
  • Rain protection and quick-drying clothes.
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent and a refillable bottle.
  • Any medication you cannot easily replace.
  • Some cash for small businesses or a temporary payment outage.

Avoid bringing a large wheeled suitcase if a backpack or soft bag will do the job.

When should you visit?

Ilha Grande is green because it receives rain. Rather than chasing a guaranteed dry month, build flexibility into a multi-night stay. Summer brings heat, humidity and Brazilian holiday demand. Cooler periods can be excellent for walking, although fronts and rough water still occur.

Boat operators make operational decisions based on actual sea conditions. Accepting a changed route is better than pressuring a crew to reproduce an online itinerary in unsuitable weather.

Ilha Grande or Búzios?

Choose Ilha Grande for trails, boat access and a nature-led stay. Choose Búzios for road access, conventional hotels, restaurants, shops and more nightlife. Our Búzios guide explains the alternative.

FAQ - Ilha Grande, Brazil

Are there cars on Ilha Grande?

There is no normal road network for visitors connecting the island's communities and beaches. Travel is mainly on foot or by boat.

Is Vila do Abraão the best place to stay?

For most first-time visitors, yes. It simplifies arrival, restaurants, supplies and tour departures.

Can you visit Ilha Grande as a day trip?

It is possible through organised trips, but an overnight stay delivers a much better sense of the island and avoids spending most of the day in transit.

Do you need a guide for the trails?

Not for every marked route. A guide becomes more valuable on long, difficult or low-light hikes and whenever current trail conditions are uncertain.

How many nights should you stay?

Three nights is a balanced first visit; add more for hiking, diving or weather flexibility.

How do you get to Ilha Grande from Rio?

Travel by road to a mainland departure point, then take a boat to the island. Check which port your ticket uses before booking the road and sea legs separately.

What is the best time to visit Ilha Grande?

Choose dates around the weather and the kind of beach days you want. Boat departures and trail conditions can change with the sea and rain, so keep plans flexible.

Can you pay by card on Ilha Grande?

Many businesses accept cards, but carry some cash for smaller purchases and transport. Do not rely on finding an ATM at the moment you need one.
