Leme · Leme beach base
Arena Leme
An option at the Leme end of the coastline. Consider the location if you prefer this end of the beach to southern Copacabana.
Copacabana · Beach access without a seafront address
Windsor Martinique Copacabana
Half a block from Copacabana beach on Rua Sá Ferreira. A smaller rooftop pool and restaurant make this a practical alternative to the larger waterfront hotels.
Copacabana / near Arpoador · Exploring both beach neighbourhoods
Atlantis Copacabana Hotel
On the Copacabana side of the Arpoador area, within walking distance of Ipanema. Its rooftop pool and terrace offer a place to unwind after a day on either beach.
Copacabana / near Ipanema · Metro and beach access
South American Copacabana Hotel
On Rua Francisco Sá in Copacabana, near the Ipanema boundary and General Osório metro station. The hotel has a pool, gym and restaurant, with both beach areas within walking distance.
A straightforward hotel near Cardeal Arcoverde metro and the northern half of Copacabana beach. Confirm the room category and current pet conditions before booking.
Formerly Mar Ipanema, this hotel stands on Rua Visconde de Pirajá in the neighbourhood’s shopping and dining district. It offers renovated rooms, a gym and spa facilities.

Rio can be surprisingly affordable once you stop insisting on waking up inside a rooftop infinity pool. Accommodation is where the biggest savings are possible. The trick is not simply finding the lowest nightly rate. A cheap hotel that requires several long Uber journeys every day can stop looking cheap fairly quickly.
For most first-time travellers, I would prioritize Copacabana and Botafogo when searching for affordable accommodation. Both give you public transport, restaurants and reasonable access to Rio's main sights. Here are the types of hotels I would check first.
1. ibis budget Copacabana
This is one of the easiest budget hotels to recommend on location alone. ibis budget Copacabana sits on Rua Constante Ramos, a few minutes from Copacabana Beach and within reach of the metro. The hotel currently advertises 24-hour reception and simple rooms aimed squarely at budget travellers.
You are not booking this hotel for a marble bathroom the size of your apartment. You are booking it because you can sleep, shower and walk to Copacabana. For a sightseeing-heavy trip, that is often enough.
Botafogo is one of my favourite areas for travellers trying to control costs. ibis budget Praia de Botafogo sits near the waterfront and within walking distance of Botafogo's restaurants and transport connections. The neighborhood also gives you good access toward both Centro and Copacabana.
If Ipanema hotel prices are making you reconsider the entire Brazil trip, check Botafogo before giving up.
3. ibis Rio de Janeiro Botafogo
The standard ibis is another practical choice in Botafogo. It is close to Botafogo metro station and the hotel specifically highlights access to Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer and the city's main transport routes.
It may cost more than ibis budget, but sometimes the difference is small enough to justify the upgrade. Always compare the final rate, not just the brand name.
4. Small independent hotels in Copacabana
Copacabana has one enormous advantage over Ipanema: supply. There are dozens of small hotels a few streets back from Avenida Atlântica. Some buildings look dated from the outside but offer clean, simple rooms in extremely useful locations. Check recent guest reviews carefully, particularly for noise, air conditioning and cleanliness.
Rio in summer is not the moment to discover that the air conditioner is technically decorative.
5. Hotels around Cantagalo
The streets around Cantagalo metro station can offer better-value accommodation than the first line of Copacabana. You remain close enough to walk to the beach while gaining easy metro access.
This is a particularly practical area if your trip includes Centro, Botafogo and the main tourist sights.
6. Hotels around Siqueira Campos
Siqueira Campos is another useful Copacabana base. You have the metro, supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants and beach all within reach. Budget travel becomes much easier when breakfast can come from a neighborhood bakery rather than a hotel buffet costing half your daily food budget.
7. Centro for very short stays
Hotels in central Rio can be substantially cheaper than beach-area properties. I would consider Centro if you have business nearby, an early Santos Dumont flight or a very specific itinerary.
For a typical first holiday, though, I prefer paying slightly more for Copacabana or Botafogo. Centro becomes much quieter outside office hours and is less convenient for spontaneous evenings near the beach.
8. Hostels with private rooms
Do not assume a hostel automatically means a dormitory. Many Rio hostels offer private rooms. For solo travellers or couples, these can give you a good location, social atmosphere and lower price than a traditional hotel.
Copacabana has particularly strong hostel options, which we cover in our best hostels in Copacabana guide.
How to find cheaper hotel rates in Rio
Avoid searching only once. Hotel prices change dramatically by date. Carnival, New Year's Eve and major events can transform a reasonable hotel into something resembling a small mortgage payment. If your dates are flexible, compare several weeks.
Also check whether breakfast is included and whether taxes or fees are added later. A 55€ room with breakfast may be better value than a 48€ room that charges 15€ per person for breakfast.
