Copacabana · Historic beachfront stay
Copacabana Palace
A landmark address facing Copacabana beach. Compare the room category and view rather than assuming every room looks out to sea.
Facing Copacabana beach near the fort, Miramar combines a rooftop pool with beach service and a restaurant. A strong option for the waterfront with easy access to Arpoador.

Botafogo does not have the international fame of Copacabana or Ipanema. That is part of why I like it. The neighborhood has restaurants, bars, metro access, views toward Sugarloaf and accommodation that can cost considerably less than a comparable room beside Ipanema Beach. You lose the ability to walk out and swim. You gain one of Rio's most useful bases.
For travellers who plan to explore rather than spend every day on the sand, that is a very fair trade.
1. Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro
Yoo2 is one of Botafogo's better-known upscale hotels. The big selling point is the view across Botafogo Bay toward Sugarloaf Mountain. This is the kind of hotel where a rooftop drink becomes part of the stay rather than simply another bar.
I would choose it for couples who want something stylish without paying Ipanema beachfront prices.
2. Novotel RJ Praia de Botafogo
Novotel gives you a recognizable full-service hotel in a very practical location. You have the waterfront nearby and can reach Botafogo's metro, shopping and restaurants without complicated logistics. This is particularly useful for families or travellers who prefer an established international hotel setup.
3. ibis Rio de Janeiro Botafogo
ibis is a strong mid-budget option. The hotel sits close to Botafogo metro station and currently highlights easy access to Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana and Centro. This is exactly why Botafogo works so well.
It may not be your main attraction, but it places several attractions within easy reach.
4. ibis budget Praia de Botafogo
For lower prices, the budget version deserves a look. The hotel is near Botafogo's waterfront, restaurants and shopping, with simple rooms aimed at travellers who care more about location than luxury amenities.
I would happily stay somewhere like this on a trip where I expect to leave after breakfast and return after dinner. Paying for a giant pool you never see is not a compulsory part of travel.
5. Small hotels near Botafogo metro
The blocks surrounding the metro station are particularly useful. You can reach Copacabana quickly while also travelling toward Flamengo and Centro. Restaurants and bars are close enough that you do not need a taxi every evening. For me, this is the sweet spot of Botafogo.
6. Guesthouses toward Humaitá
Move inland toward Humaitá and you will find more residential accommodation. These stays can be quieter and work well for repeat visitors or longer trips. You are farther from the metro, though, so check transport before booking. Rio distances that look tiny on a map occasionally contain an unexpected hill.
7. Apartments for longer stays
Botafogo is one of the areas where I would seriously consider an apartment for a week or more. The neighborhood has supermarkets, gyms, cafés and restaurants used by residents rather than only visitors. That makes it easy to settle into normal city life.
For remote workers, this may be more comfortable than spending ten days inside a small hotel room.
Food and nightlife: Botafogo has developed one of Rio's more interesting restaurant and bar scenes.
The main downside is the beach. Botafogo Bay is beautiful to look at but not where I would plan my swimming day. Copacabana is only a short journey away.
Choose Copacabana if the beach is central to the trip. Choose Botafogo if you want better value and expect to explore different parts of Rio every day. I would also lean toward Botafogo for longer stays.
The neighborhood feels more like somewhere people live rather than an uninterrupted hotel district.
