Copacabana · Historic beachfront stay
Copacabana Palace
A landmark address facing Copacabana beach. Compare the room category and view rather than assuming every room looks out to sea.
Facing Copacabana beach near the fort, Miramar combines a rooftop pool with beach service and a restaurant. A strong option for the waterfront with easy access to Arpoador.

Rio does luxury hotels particularly well. Part of that is the hotels themselves. Part of it is slightly unfair because placing almost any swimming pool in front of Ipanema instantly improves it by about 40%.
If you are looking for 5-star hotels in Rio de Janeiro, your first decision should be whether you want beachfront city life or a resort experience. These are the hotels I would shortlist.
1. Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro
Best for: Ipanema
Fasano sits directly on Ipanema Beach at Avenida Vieira Souto 80. (Fasano) The rooftop infinity pool is the headline feature, with views toward Arpoador, Dois Irmãos and Corcovado. (Fasano)
The hotel has just 89 accommodations, giving it a more intimate atmosphere than many larger luxury properties. (Fasano) If I wanted luxury plus neighborhood life, this would be near the top of my list.
Copacabana Palace is Rio's classic grand hotel. It sits directly opposite Copacabana Beach on Avenida Atlântica and has 140 rooms and suites. (Belmond) The hotel has hosted major public figures, entertainers and events throughout its long history. There are newer hotels. Few have this amount of character.
Fairmont sits at Avenida Atlântica 4240, close to the western end of Copacabana. (Fairmont) That puts you close to Arpoador and within easy reach of Ipanema. The hotel has 375 rooms and beachfront views. (Fairmont)
I particularly like the location for travellers who cannot decide between Copacabana and Ipanema. Fairmont's answer is essentially: have both.
4. Janeiro Hotel
Best for: Leblon
Janeiro is a 51-room boutique hotel facing Leblon Beach. (Janeiro Hotel) It has a much smaller scale than Fairmont or Grand Hyatt and emphasizes a more intimate style of luxury.
Views take in Leblon, Ipanema, Dois Irmãos and Corcovado depending on the room. (Janeiro Hotel) This is probably my favourite choice for a quieter couples' trip.
5. Emiliano Rio
Best for: contemporary Copacabana
Emiliano provides a modern alternative to the grand-hotel atmosphere of Copacabana Palace. Its beachfront position keeps you close to everything while the property itself feels more design-focused. It works well for travellers who want luxury without a huge resort feeling.
6. Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro
Best for: resort facilities
Grand Hyatt sits in Barra da Tijuca rather than the Zona Sul. It has 436 rooms and suites, each with a private balcony, along with pool, spa and beach access. (Hyatt) Choose it when the hotel is part of the holiday.
I would not choose it purely as a place to sleep between twelve-hour sightseeing days.
7. Hotel Nacional Rio de Janeiro
Best for: São Conrado views
Hotel Nacional is the distinctive cylindrical tower overlooking São Conrado Beach. The setting between the ocean and Pedra da Gávea is exceptional. (Riotur.Rio) It can also represent interesting value compared with luxury hotels in Ipanema. The compromise is that you will use transport more often.
8. Santa Teresa Hotel RJ MGallery
Best for: boutique hillside atmosphere
Santa Teresa gives you a completely different version of luxury. Instead of waking up opposite an urban beach, you are surrounded by historic streets and tropical greenery. It is particularly appealing for repeat visitors or couples looking for atmosphere.
Which luxury hotel would I choose?
For a first trip, my shortlist would be:
Fasano if budget allows and I want Ipanema.
Copacabana Palace if the history is part of the experience.
Janeiro Hotel for something smaller in Leblon.
Fairmont for a practical beachfront location.
For a relaxing resort holiday, Grand Hyatt becomes much more competitive.
Should you spend more for an ocean-view room?
In Rio, potentially yes. Ocean views are not simply a strip of distant blue. You may get the beach, mountains and city all in one frame. That said, I would still choose a better hotel location over paying significantly more for a view in an inconvenient area.
